After reading several topics, students engage in class discussions and exercises that encourage them to choose the pondering process represented in the matters. Lipman's presumptions are that students are by nature thinking about such philosophical issues since truth, justness, and personal id and that college student can and should learn to explore alternatives for their own views, to consider evidence, to create distinctions, and draw conclusions. Lipman differentiates between ordinary thinking and critical pondering. Ordinary pondering is simple and lacks standards; critical pondering is more intricate and is depending on standards of objectivity, utility, or persistence.
